"I always knew that it was dangerous to allow my husband to treat me as though I were an antebellum belle, but it never seemed worth fighting about. It was. He handled tax matters, and I signed the paperwork obligingly to preserve the peace, always suspecting that he should have had an accountant do it. Despite the fact that he was a genuine mathematical genius he wasn’t a tax authority, and that was that. I entreat you earnestly, if you are an older couple and one of you has handled all such matters–my mother always did it in my family–rectify the situation as quickly as possible. Ignorance can be devastating and very, very dangerous. The matter is worsened by the fact that we sheltered ladies don’t know what we don’t know. We do know that the IRS has hired 16,000 new agents with nothing better to do than pounce on the ignorant and vulnerable, and once you come to their attention they can go through back submissions for years and audit your returns for several years to come."
